Why should you attend?
Employees who are sufficiently orientated are more likely to complete their assignment abroad as they will be prepared for their new life in a different environment. Research from Mendenhall et al (1997) has concluded that up to 1/3 of expatriates who are assigned to global assignments repatriate early. The main reasons being: the inability to adapt to the new culture; spouse/partner unable to adjust through not being able to work; and the lack of country knowledge. (Schell and Solomon 1997). As Organisations spend a considerable amount of money to position a person abroad, investment in the employee’s wellbeing is essential to their settling in and becoming productive as soon as possible to benefit both the employer and employee. Employees who are sufficiently orientated are more likely to complete their assignment abroad as they will be prepared for their new life on an island.
Employers can feel assured that the ‘ground work’ of familiarising the new employee has already been taken care off before they arrive at their destination.
The orientation briefings are also ideal when used as part of your Company in-house Expatriate Preparation Programme, as the aim is to introduce participants to the practicalities of living successfully on this island.
Who will benefit from the briefings?
- Anyone who needs to adjust quickly and efficiently in a new environment with minimal disruption to themselves and the family;
- Non working spouses will welcome this orientation because initially they will be more exposed to the culture of Bermuda, and will immediately come into direct contact with the locals.
